The Trauma Resuscitation Nurse (TRN) is a specialty trained nurse designated by the trauma service to respond to and provide care and management of critically ill and traumatically injured patients during the resuscitation phase in the Emergency Department, including care of the patients through diagnosis suites and in the OR until admission to an acute or intensive care unit, or transfer to the care of OR staff. The ED and ICU TRNs are assigned from ED and NTICU. Each TRN is expected to help their home units when an active trauma is not in the trauma resuscitation phase. The TRN is available to assist in patient care in home unit outlined by each unit.
The Trauma Program Critical Care TRN is present 7 days a week during our peak trauma hours and functions as not only a clinical expert in trauma but as an extension of the trauma program leadership. This site-specific TRN leads efforts to teach, support research efforts of the medical center by collecting data, following research protocols, and generating researchable ideas. They also utilize existing reporting mechanisms to review and report opportunities for quality improvement
