ECMO Primers are the primary bedside experts on ECMO. They are advanced practice specialists who can set up and prime an ECMO circuit and initiate a patient on VV, VA, or VAV ECMO. Primers are responsible for all ECMO circuit procedures including, but not limited to, priming circuits, initiating a patient on ECMO, changing out a circuit, changing circuit parts (pigtails, connectors, etc.), removing patients from ECMO, inspection and disposal of used circuits, and cleaning equipment. They also are trained to assist or function as the ECMO Specialist at the bedside, with the capacity to manage all aspects of an ECMO circuit, assist with staffing, and provide technical and clinical support to all staff. The ECMO Primer works collaboratively with other team members to provide direct patient care through manipulation of the ECMO circuit.

The Primers contribute to Process Improvement by reviewing and presenting cases for the entire ECMO Team. They assist with policy and practice guideline development within the ECMO Program.
